On December 23 the Baotou‑Yinchuan section of the Baotou‑Yinchuan high‑speed railway opened for service. The trip between Baotou and Yinchuan, which used to take a little more than six hours, is now about 2½ hours. This roughly 519‑kilometre line links the existing Beijing‑Baotou passenger line with the Yinchuan‑Lanzhou high‑speed route, completing the “Beijing‑Lanzhou corridor” in the national high‑speed network and dramatically improving connections between the Northwest and the North‑East and North‑China regions.

Construction along the route passed through complex geology and fragile ecosystems. Workers used on‑site transplanting and seed‑ling replanting to protect the environment; more than 90 percent of the rare plants that were moved survived. On the very first day of operation, a variety of travel needs converged on the new line. In the future the railway is expected to speed the flow of tourists, agricultural products and manufactured goods, helping the surrounding regions develop together more quickly.
